Cast your mind back to the way it was 20 or 30 years ago when jobs were clear-cut, the battle for talent didn’t exist, and people were paid the same for doing the same work regardless of their performance. The precise nature of jobs during this time meant that remuneration levels were reasonably fixed and individuals had relatively little control over their pay increases. Life was simple.
